Today’s Manna – Luke 8:26-27

“They sailed to the region of the Gerasenes, which is across the lake from Galilee. When Jesus stepped ashore, He was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the tombs.”  Luke 8:26-27

Who got out of the boat?
As the boat finally reached the eastern edge of the Sea of Galilee and the bow wedged into the stony shore, we need to carefully read Luke’s account of this journey. It seems Luke is telling us that only Jesus got out of the boat! This is re-enforced later when Luke refers to only Jesus getting back into the boat (8:37). Mark’s account likewise suggests that only Jesus got out of the boat 5:2&18).

Did they vote with their feet and stay put in the boat?
While in theory we would all say we are willing to travel closely with Jesus, there are times when our fears can cause us to stay put in our own boats.

Today’s Manna – Luke 8:26-29

“They sailed to the region of the Gerasenes, which is across the lake from Galilee. When Jesus stepped ashore, He was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at His feet, shouting at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don’t torture me!”  For Jesus had commanded the impure spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places.” Luke 8:26-29

To the “other side” on a rescue mission…

When Jesus chose to sail to the region of the Gerasenes the others  in the boat might have been wondering, “Why are we heading towards THIS?” An area Jewish people avoided for many reasons. Observant Jews have a few ritual purity No-No’s facing them here:

  • they are forbidden to set foot on Gentile soil (Acts 10:28)
  • they are prohibited from viewing a naked man and,
  • futhermore, have issues with tombs.

But Jesus demonstrated His love by getting out of the boat.

Today’s Manna – What the Lord Teaches Us

Here are twelve main things we need to be taught in this life by the Lord:

  • How to control our tongue? (Job 6:24)
  • Which path should I take in life? (Psalm 25:4)
  • What is God’s Way? (Psalm 27:11, Psalm 86:11)
  • What I should say to God? (Job 37:19)
  • What is Truth? (Psalm 25:5)
  • Understanding that my days here on earth should teach me wisdom (Psalm 90:12)
  • What is the way of His statutes and how we apply them to our lives? (Psalm 119:33)
  • To learn how to pray (Luke 11:1)
  • God’s Judgments (Psalm 119:66,108)
  • What is God’s will for our lives? (Psalm 143:10)
  • What are God’s statutes? (Psalm 119:12,26,64 and 68,124,135)
  • Knowledge comes from Him (Psalm 119:66)

Today’s Manna – Matthew 23:12-13

“For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted. Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to.” Matthew 23:12-13

The bible makes it clear that we need to be dispensers of grace and be teachable.

  • Galatians 5:25,26 “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.”
  • Proverbs 19:11: “A man’s wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offense.”
  • Proverbs 23:23: “Buy the truth and do not sell it; get wisdom, discipline and understanding.”

Today’s Manna – Matthew 23:1-7

“Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: “The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses seat. So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.Everything they do is done for people to see: They make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long; they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues; they love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and to be called ‘Rabbi’ by others.” Matthew 23:1-7

To know if you are teachable answer this question, “Am I able to agree to disagree with others and still love them?” Do I always have to have it my way? Am I legalistic, dogmatic? Jesus faced these types of individuals in His ministry, They were the Pharisee and the Sadducee.

Today’s Manna – James 5:16

“Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” James 5:16

The key to being teachable is the willingness of each us to admit-confess our mistakes then learn from them.

If you’re green you’re growing. If you’re ripe, you’re rotting” — Ray Kroc

Today’s Manna – Acts 1:8 “Spiritual Power”

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8

Spiritual Power is the ability to accomplish God’s work or His will. It can be represented by the formula ==> Movement + Direction = Accomplishment.
