July7th, 2014 – July 12th, 2014, Idyllwild, CA, Idyllwild Pines Camp’s Encounter 924 students continued their summer leadership training, spiritual teaching, life skill training, and fun. Here are the highlights of the week.
Leadership Training with Kevin Relyea
Kevin Relyea introduced the 6th lie: A leader can lead from a distance. Encounter 924 students then were assigned key scripture that point out the characteristics of leaders. The verse that resonated with the group was John 10:3-5. Jesus explains the characteristic of the Good Shepherd, and in that He claims to be the Shepard to his people.
“The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.”” John 10:3-5
The key characteristics of a leader are demonstrated in this passage. This passage presents a personable, intentional, relationship-seeking leader. One cannot lead a group until you are close to the group, only when you are close you are able to understand the group’s skills, motives, needs, wants and goals. This idea of leading closely is relevant to our relationship with God. Being in close proximity with God leads to effective leading of God. Leading is about being attentive and available to the people; it is not about being distant and unavailable.

God has greatly blessed Idyllwild Pines Camp and Conference Center throughout 2013! Over 8,000 campers attended camp sharing that coming to camp ” impacted me to read my bible more and that it is ok to talk about God” and “impacted me by allowing me to escape everyday life and just feel and be closer to God”. For over 90 years Idyllwild Pines Camp has been a place for our guests to experience renewal, discover truth and be forever transformed. As we get closer to our 100th year birthday we will continually unveil the story of our amazing history and how the camp has been a place of revival. We are in the process of capturing those stories and would like to hear yours as well. Comments and stories can be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org or can be posted below.
