Today’s Manna – Matthew 23:12-13

“For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted. Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites!You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to.” Matthew 23:12-13

The bible makes it clear that we need to be dispensers of grace and be teachable.

  • Galatians 5:25,26 “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.”
  • Proverbs 19:11: “A man’s wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offense.”
  • Proverbs 23:23: “Buy the truth and do not sell it; get wisdom, discipline and understanding.”

 

Why We Care About Israel – Reason Six

Reason number six to care about Israel:  All other nations in the world were man-made, but Israel was created by an act of God.

14 The LORD said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, “Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west. 15 All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring[a] forever. 16 I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted. 17 Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I am giving it to you.” 18 So Abram went to live near the great trees of Mamre at Hebron, where he pitched his tents. There he built an altar to the LORD. Genesis 13:14-18

And God “saw that it was good”. Our God is an faithful, promise-keeping, miracle-making God whose promises and covenants do not change ever. He is for us, He is for Israel and the Jewish people, and He will not waiver. God will “bless those who bless you [Israel]”, from everlasting to everlasting.

19 Then Nebuchadnezzar was filled with wrath… He answered by giving orders to heat the furnace seven times more than it was usually heated. 20 He commanded certain valiant warriors who were in his army to tie up Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego in order to cast them into the furnace of blazing fire. 21 Then these men were tied up in their trousers, their coats, their caps and their other clothes, and were cast into the midst of the furnace of blazing fire. 22 For this reason, because the king’s command was urgent and the furnace had been made extremely hot, the flame of the fire slew those men who carried up Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego. 23 But these three men, Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego fell into the midst of the furnace of blazing fire still tied up. Daniel 3:19-23

Verse of the Day – Luke 6:40

Students are not above their teacher, but all who are fully trained will be like their teacher. (Luke 6:40)

One reason why modeling is so important in the making of disciples is, as every parent can tell you, disciples—like children—become who you are and not what you teach them to be. The old saying is true: things are easier caught than taught.

Verse of the Day – 1 Timothy 4:12

Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. (1Tim 4:12)

When it came to the ingredient of modeling for the disciple and disciple-maker of Jesus, Paul expressed that its effectiveness as a tool is not limited by age. Even the young can set an effective, inspiring example of speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity, as any youth pastor can attest.

Verse of the Day – Matthew 28:18-19

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations.” (Matt 28:18-19)

The beginning of the Great Commission begins with a statement of the authority of the Great Commissioner that issues it. The central command to make disciples comes from the Disciple-maker himself, who modeled how it could be done then commissions that it should be done.

Verse of the Day – Mark 2:14

As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him. (Mark 2:14)

As a tax-collector, Levi was excommunicated from the synagogue and disqualified from being a witness in court. Isn’t it ironic that a man who couldn’t testify in court went on to write a book that does nothing but testify and has continued to testify to Jesus as the King and Messiah for over 2,000 years?

As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him. (Mark 2:14)

It seems reasonable to suggest that all the teachings of the Hebrew Bible (Tanak) were stored in Levi’s brain for years before he betrayed his faith and his countrymen to work for the hated Romans. In his gospel, he presents Jesus as the King. Was this the first time Levi realized he was the King’s servant?

Of all the gospels—in fact of all the books in the New Testament—none contains more Old Testament scripture quotations applied to Jesus than Matthew. Could he have followed Jesus because when Christ approached him he saw before him the fulfillment of all that he had studied for years before?

Mark uses only two sentences to describe Levi’s decision to follow Jesus. That’s enough, but we must remember that behind every brief description of decision there’s a long story of the journey that brings one to that decisive point.
